History of Marble

We see that the first examples of marble art emerged in Anatolia. Especially in the Helen and Roman ages, marble has experienced a golden age. Marble has been used intensively in the temples we see in many parts of Anatolia. We see that marble processing in Afyon has more than 2000 years of history with around 60 old quarries and structures such as unfinished columns and blocks.

Iscehisar (Docimium) Marble

It is narrated that the city of Docimium was founded by the general Dokimos who lived under Alexander the Great. The purpose of the city is white and violet marble beds. Marbles extracted from Iscehisar were exported not only to Anatolia but also to North Africa and many cities in Italy.

Although the rich marble deposits in Iscehisar district of Afyon have been known since 300 BC and used for many years in the Ancient period, they were left non-functional for a long time. In the Republican period, it was reprocessed to be used in the construction of Anitkabir and the Turkish Grand Assembly (TBMM).

While marble operations were carried out with old technologies until the 1980s, new technologies were also used in marble production after this date. The marble, which was sent to other provinces as a raw material without processing until 1983, was processed with the marble factories established in the district after this date and sold and exported as different types of marbles.

Today, marble deposits in the district are located 1 km away from the district and are operated in two main centres. The marble deposits in these two places are 1300 metres long, 500 metres wide with 100 metres thickness in Dangictepe respectively: 4500 metres long, 1000 metres wide with 260 metres thickness in Bacakale.

In today’s archaeological excavations, marble quarry works and marble pieces belonging to the ancient period were found in Iscehisar district of Afyon.
